Founded in 1930 by Charles and Dorothy Macaskie Spielplatz is one of the oldest sun clubs in the UK. It is also unique as the country’s only residential naturist community; around 60 people live here permanently.

Comprising 4.5 hectares the grounds contain a pleasant mix of mature woodland and carefully tended sunbathing lawns. The facilities established here over the past eighty years are both extensive and impressive. There is an 18.5 metre x 5 metre outdoor heated swimming pool, a well equipped children’s play area, two miniten courts and a petanque court. There are also facilities for table tennis, badminton, volleyball, pool and table football

The large club house contains a sauna, licensed bar, restaurant serving excellent meals at value for money prices and a comfortably furnished sun lounge for when the weather isn’t appropriate for outdoor nudity. Outside is a large verandah which catches the last of the sun each day.

From the outset the Macaskies adopted a socially inclusive membership policy which continues today. Quotas, waiting lists and the continual debate about “gender balance” are not things to be found at Spielplatz. The results of this policy have surprised those who feel that sun clubs need highly restrictive admission policies so much that they prefer not to talk about them. Spielplatz has not been overwhelmed by crowds of single gentlemen, ladies and families have not been frightened off joining by a preponderance of gentlemen and the male/female ratio among the membership has actually rarely been far off equilibrium. All of this has been achieved without the kind of intervention and crude attempts at social engineering which many clubs feel is essential when selecting members (and which amounts to little more than disguised discrimination against single people).

In my opinion there is no better introduction to naturism than this very special world famous place. It is not one of the cheapest clubs to join or visit, but the extent of the facilities and the warmth and sincerity of the welcome you will receive from everybody here more than compensates for that.
